[Engine, Environment and Animation] Problems that needs fixing

Engine
  • During one of the play through Rex got turned upside down but continued to keep running with his body under the map and the legs sticking through. it did eventually correct itself but started running back to missed points
  • Wrong way doesn't register when walking backwards
  • Refine blocking volumes, players can run up the blocking volumes
  • Manged to get on top of the volcano, apparently a player got launched off something and made it up there. Lecturers suggested placing a kill volume over the top of the volcano
  • add more logic blocking volumes in the salt flats. perhaps more dinos bones or something but this may require Adam do model more stuff or we fill it with what we have
  • Change menu music Jen has a track that could work
  • AI collision needs adjusting
Environment
  • Some players thought the environment was a bit bland and suggested adding more life, landmarks and character.
  • Fix the clouds casting shadows
Animations
  • Carlton needs to have his run cycle fixed there appears to be a notch in his animation again
  • A number of other animations need to be cleaned up
This is the feedback we received and found during the Game social

All Interviews in Trailer, (Adobe After Effects)

Here is a look into after effects and how the trailer is looking after all of the sound and video is synced up. Currently the interviews are taking up the majority of the time, but we intend to put VLOG over the top of the video, this is why we did the video and the sound separately.

Targets For 18/04/16

John will more than likely ask for the following on the Monday back:

  • GDD Should be nearly completed
  • The development trailer should be in some stage where its all blocked out with either the actual content or placeholder
  • The game in its current stage probably with some of the issues fixed that were discovered during the Games social
  • Promo Stuff
Adam - Focus on getting a preliminary trailer ready if you have time fill out relative sections of the GDD
Jen - Promo content and relevant sections of the GDD
Rhys - Start finding solutions to the issues discovered so you can explain that to john when he asks, as well as fill in as much as you can to the relevant GDD sections
Michael - Clean up Game animations, fill out relevant GDD sections and work with Adam on the trailer content

i appreciate were all busy with stuff but if we can do this its a little less likely John will yell at us

[Development trailer] Notes on recordings

I'm having a look at each of the videos and deciding whether its good or not, whether perhaps we need to re-shoot some stuff but this will probably after we've done an initial test trailer where we'll put it all together and see if it really needs to be re shot.

DSC_0020 Jurassic team introduction

To be honest we look bored, like Jen has said we basically get into an assessment mind set so we become very rigged and very monotone.

My introduction I feel is terrible it sounds like I'm bored and I just want to get it over with, possibly we just need to stick the camera on and just run through it a few times so we don't feel like were being assessed.

 DSC_0016 Rhys Interview

Video quality seems pixilated, perhaps we need to borrow a proper camcorder from Adam if we do as a team elect to redo some videos. Actually this could have been caused by the HD not loading on you tube

Rhys your speech is clear and I can understand what your saying but maybe a little fast. It does however and I know we ALL did this but it just look like your reading a script and not talking to an interviewer.

DSC_0015 Michael Interview

Even though in the chat afterwards we talk about where I was looking after reviewing it again, it doesn't feel like I'm talking to an interviewer. It feels like I'm reading off somewhere because of where my eyes are looking they are aimed up and not to another person at the same eye level.

My speech could be perhaps a little louder and also like Rhys I feel that my speech was quite quick but we could just be trying to get through the whole paragraph in time that we have.

DSC_0011 Adam Interview

Adam I think you did a pretty good one in terms of body language and speech, though maybe a little fast but I think this came with trying to keep to the time limit so its not really a problem. Once again perhaps looking a bit too much at the script but better than myself

DSC_0006 Jen Interview

Probably nit picking at this but there is quite a bit of reflection in your glasses Jen of the light and windows in front of you. You could be a little louder, I can hear what you are saying but it still seems rather quiet. Though wasn't a bad interview

After looking at where everyone is looking in each video I think the general problem is that there is too much of an angle between where we are looking to where the camera is. Basically an interviewer would be right next to the camera so there should only be a little difference. Problem is were looking too far away to where an interviewer would likely be. Hopefully this diagram I drew quickly might help.  As always this is just my impression doesn't mean it correct you could feel different about them so we should talk about this at some point.

Development Trailer Storyboard idea 1

Storyboard

  • Uni logo
  • Game title
  • Team interview
  • Game play (Final Game)
  • Rhys explains idea (Interview)
  • (Rhys Voice over) Group discussing work (group chatting muted)
  • Jen discusses characters (Interview)
  • (Jen Voice over) Character Development ( Fade from museum pictures, quick sketches, concept, models)
  • (Jen voice over) Characters 360 pan and wire frame
  • Adam discuses Environment (Interviews)
  • (Adam voice over) Environment: level build up from scratch to finished
  • Game play
  • Michael Talks about animation (Interview)
  • (Michael voice over) Michael acting out animation reference (any talking done in the video will be muted)
  • (Michael voice over) Animation influence
  • Rhys talks about U.S.P and A.I
  • (Rhys voice over) camera showing Rhys testing AI
  • Game play (Final Game)
  • Game title
This is an idea for how to layout the development trailer its probably going to change a bit since I've had some feedback from Jules and Richard. Yes they signed off on the interviews even giving advice on how each one should be conducted

Content needed:
  • Interviews with each member (Tough S**T if you don't want to)
  • Recording of group working
  • Mood boards
  • Concept art
  • Pictures
  • Game play footage
  • Game Title
  • Reference Videos
More possibly needed to be added

Interviews

Adam Interview
AA108B

Interview to be conducted in front of the classroom using the Lecturers computer with the big Centiq having some work on it, and the big TV to features some shots of the environment.

Jen Interview
AA109

Similar to Adams interview, the interview will be conducted on the PC with the big Centiq with work once again being displayed on it, and the big TV shall feature 360 pan of characters

Michael Interview
AA108A

Interview will be conducted on the lecturers PC at the front of the classroom, with work being displayed on both the TV and the monitor. An animation show reel will be presented on the TV

Rhys Interview
AA207

Interview will be conducted on the lecturers PC at the front of the classroom, with work being displayed on both the monitor and the TV. The TV will features the most over complicated Blueprint you have

I'm pushing forward with the Interviews because in all the videos I have watched not one of them wasn't largely comprised of developers being interviewed. The reason behind all the different rooms is the lecturers said it would be good if we looked like we worked in a large area like a professional studio. (all documentaries videos are a sham like this they said)

Key notes for Interviews
  • Each interview should make it obvious what you do (hence why I have chosen those specific places for Jen and Adam, this was recommended by the lecturers)
  • All interviews are scripted so to avoid words like um, ah and the lecturers particularly stressed this one Rhys sorry (just a bunch of math)
  • Don't over complicate your work keep it simple like you're explaining to five year old
  • Be, look and talk professionally don't mumble (Yes I'm aware this only really applies to me)
  • Avoid words like Bog standard, Typical and Generic
  • People should be amazed at work you have done
  • Talk about problems you have solved but once again keep it simple and brief as we only have 1 min and 30 seconds
We can rent proper cameras from Adam at FADE, we can speak to a kylie in Dynever she know about lighting and interviews and a few other people if we need assistance on creating good interviews.

Development trailer research

After reviewing and breaking down the second by second of each of these video up to 1.30 since that it likely to be the total length of the development trailer i have found a number of things.

The video generally contain the following:
  • INTERVIEWS with developers
  • Game play
  • Various shots of Developers working
  • Voice over Game play
  • Cut scenes
  • Modeling
  • Animating
  • Concept drawing
  • Story boards
  • Mood boards
  • Work gone into the Game design document
  • Logos
I have empathized interviews due to most of the videos were made up of people discussing the game even during the demonstrating of cut scenes or game play. it is highly likely we WILL be talking in these videos and that means ALL of us. The trailer will also contain footage of us working since that was generally how it was shown in the videos above.

Guess who now really loves ZBrush and it's Quicksave entries...

 We got Bugsy's texture back!

Damaged Hard Drive + Easter Targets

Okay so after the 2nd Viva I was preparing to back up my hard drive and it got knocked/pulled over.
So in short I can no longer access my hard drive with Jurassic Kart on it.
However! All is not lost, (somewhat) I have a back up, albeit probably a few months out of date.

I have managed to recover model files via temp autosave folders etc.
Textures have backups save Bugsy, his was non recoverable however it was a simple one and can easily be redone. The other new characters don't have textures yet.

Engine Update

Attempt 1: Find position along spline

Attempt 2: checkpoint overlap
add actor to array
list of who is in what position

Skybox Fix

[animation and sound]

Good footsteps are remarkably hard to find as such I'm not really happy with the ones we have especially Rex i don't think it suits him at all. so these will be placeholders until i can find some better ones
